A National Campaign to Improve Access to Defibrillators

About the Campaign
There are more than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year. Currently, the survival rate is shockingly low – less than 10%. However, evidence shows that using a defibrillator within 3 to 5 minutes of a cardiac arrest can increase survival rates up to 70%. Greater access to these devices could save thousands of lives.
The JumpStart campaign is proposing a simple and scalable solution. It is calling for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be included as standard in all new vehicles. This means that, over time, access to these life-saving devices would radically improve. Defibrillators would be on our streets, in our car parks, in driveways… Meanwhile, maintenance checks can be incorporated into the MOT system, helping to ensure that the devices are ready-for-action in an emergency.
The idea behind JumpStart was conceived by Jonathan Harris CBE, who is now philanthropically funding the campaign.
